Art Roundup – June 2013

Here’s a quick roundup of interesting events around the planet.

A. It is a hundred years since the birth of the great collector of Russian art, George Costakis. In his honour, the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, Greece, organises ‘The Costakis Collection and the Russian Avant-Garde. 100 since the Collector’s Birth‘. Check it out until January 31, 2014.

B. Nahum Tschacbasov is being remembered with a retrospective of his work at the National Arts Club, New York. This runs till June 1-16, 2013.

C. The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC is holding an exhibition titled ‘Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes 1909-1920: When Art Danced With Music‘. It runs through September 2, 2013.

D. The Tate Liverpool holds an exhibition named ‘Chagall – Modern Master‘ from June 8 to October 2013.

E. Here’s an interesting tidbit (to be classed under ‘found art’, I guess): in Klaipėda, Lithuania, Dionyzas Varkalis has been restoring clocks, working with metal, collecting ceramics and preserving local art for decades. Much of it is on display at the Klaipėda Region Applied Art Collection‘s ‘Collection of Dionyzas Varkalis‘, which runs till June 16, 2013.

F. And, finally, the Ukrainian Museum in New York holds an exhibition titled ‘Out of Tradition: Contemporary Decorative and Applied Art‘, running till September 29, 2013.
